This was unimaginable before.

Constructing and maintaining early websites was difficult

Dating back to year 1991, the first website was created by Tim Berners-Lee. It was written manually with white background, black left aligned text and blue links. Because construction and maintenance of the early websites were difficult, it was usually done by professional programmers and website graphic designers. Normally, it would take more than one week for them to finish the website. The price to build such website was so high, that many companies with limited budgets could not afford it and would have to give up the websites creation.

The limitations of early websites:

  • Unattractive and UnintuitiveUnpredictable and Usually High Price
  • Slow Turnaround
  • Low Quality Pictures
  • Unreliable Web and E-mail Hosting
  • Terrible Customer Service
  • Very limited Search Engine Optimization

The offline & online website builders

To overcome these shortcomings, the new simple, intuitive and affordable website builders have emerged. Throughout history of building websites (Website builder.n.d., possibly two types of tools can be qualified as website builders:

  • website building software (offline)
  • Online website building tool

The former tools are downloadable programs that need to be installed on your computer before you can create a website offline. The latter ones are online tools offered by hosting providers. The main advantage of any online website builder is that it is quick, easy to use, and does not require prior experience.

One of the first website builders was Dreamweaver. It adopted WYSIWYG editing principle and established its leadership on the market by 1998. However, when the industry switched to the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) Standards, Dreamweaver and other similar apps have lost their attractiveness. With the arrival of the Standards these tools got criticized for not being flexible and compliant(Adobe Dreamweaver CC.n.d.,2817,2421105,00.asp ).

Eventually, tools integrating lots of W3C technologies in a single place were created. One of most known of these, Amaya open source tool, initially was developed as a CSS and HTML authoring system.

Because of this development, online website builders, such as Weebly, Squarespace, Jimdo, Wix and many others, have emerged. They greatly simplified the website construction. Because no code was used any more, even non-technical people became capable to service and update such websites. All this could be done by categorizing and making simple text input, the rest would be delivered by the website builder.

With technology further development, the website builders become much cheaper. Most importantly, websites built with these website builders are user-friendly. Mobile visitors won’t be frustrated either, because the websites will be automatically optimized for mobile viewing. So, they are the best solution both for small business and newbies.
