Hi. I am creating a game where you are going through a maze using your mouse. I want to make the game so that when you move your mouse forward through the maze, you are earning points but when you go backwards, you lose points(and you can't earn them back.).
The only way to "get those points back" is to pass the area where you turned around and start earning the points again. But you still don't actually get the points back. In other words, I want a penalty to be given to the player for cheating. And I want the points to be displayed so the player knows he/she messed up. How can I do this in ActionScript 2.0? Any help is useful.

Doing that itself is not a great problem, managing and displaying variables.

Anyway I suggest you to start learning ActionScript3 that gives you more power, flexibility and tutorials out there.

Do you know where I can find tutorials about that? I have this book:

But it doesn't teach me about that stuff.

That book should be enough to start and even to reach advanced skills. But you will not find any tutorial for your specific game, but a sum of tutorials for each single action.

AS3 is not complex, but needs to make a lot of practice before producing a game. It is like to say that you want to learn to paint like Raffaello today...

You could start at www.actionscript.org and apply all of those tutorials/examples.

Good luck!
